Pre-application Guidance and Health Check

Updated:2026/8/8

For SSW(i), after signing the employment contract and before applying for residence status, pre-application guidance, a health check, and other steps are carried out. The company or registered support organization may handle the preparations.

When to do it
  • Find a Company to Work For and Sign a Contract
  • Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility or permission to change status of residence
  • The person and company check the information needed for the application documents
What to Check in a Job Posting
  • Job duties, salary, working hours, and days off
  • View Residence Status Application Flow
  • Support for life in Japan, consultation contacts, and support staff
  • Confirmation about deposits, penalty fees, and cost burdens
  • Plans for departure, entry, and after arrival in Japan
What to Check First

For a Specified Skilled Worker application, documents related to the health check, such as the personal health check form, are checked. Follow the company's or application documents' instructions for the hospital, test items, and format.

  • Check the timing and method specified by the company
  • Check how originals and copies of the medical certificate and personal health check form will be handled
  • If changing fields, check whether skills or Japanese exams are needed
Things you prepare yourself and things the company prepares
  • Documents related to the employment contract
  • Publication of the Number of Specified Skilled Worker Foreign Nationals
  • Records of pre-application guidance
  • Company profile, financial statements, tax payment, and social insurance documents
  • Support plan and information if support is outsourced to a registered support organization
What the Applicant Should Check
  • Prepare your passport, residence card, photo, and application form.
  • Proof of Passing the Japanese Language and Skills Tests
  • Documents related to the health check
  • Documents as needed, such as education history, work history, and certificate of completion of technical intern training
  • For people in Japan, status of resident tax, tax payment, social insurance, and similar items
Next Step

Once preparations are complete, proceed with the application that fits your situation, such as a COE for people coming from overseas or a change of residence status for people in Japan.
